Primary Responsibilities:
The primary responsibilities of this position are:

  • Perform lab testing focused around suspension components, primarily shock absorbers.
  • Design test procedures and fixtures to support engineering development work.
  • Use industry standard testing software to run equipment, set up tests, manage and analyze test data and provide reports to engineering departments as needed.
  • Install, set-up, calibrate instrumentation and data acquisition systems for vehicle testing.
  • Support vehicle dynamics testing at Hitachi and customer proving grounds facilities. Up to 40% travel required, including international.
  • Assemble and test shock absorbers based on specifications provided by engineers
  • Manage parts inventory, tool kits, and workspace to ensure efficiency

This position does not require a 4yr degree but requires a high level of technical aptitude gained through either education (technical school, associate’s degree, industry certification, etc.) or experience in an automotive vehicle or test technician.

Strong PC skills are required, including familiarity with MS office applications and the ability to learn to run applications for controlling hydraulic test equipment and data acquisition systems.

Experience with vehicle and component instrumentation for vehicle chassis, suspension, or NVH is desired.

CAD skills are desired with the ability to design and fabricate text fixtures as needed, or provide input to in-house machine shop regarding fixture requirements.

Job Responsibilities:
Includes the following (other duties may be documented and assigned by local management and some duties may not apply dependent upon the requirements of the position at each specific (HIAMS)AM site and/or the strengths of the employee and the needs of the company):

  • Develop software component design specifications
  • Develop software unit test specifications
  • Lead software design reviews
  • Conduct technical impact analysis for software change requests
  • Identify technical risks in the design, and develop mitigation strategies
  • Monitor software coders work progress; develop source code as necessary to maintain program timelines
  • Participate or lead code reviews, unit test reviews, and integration test reviews
  • Support development of software requirements specification (SRS) and software architecture specification sub-sections, if needed by the software architect
  • Support development of integration test specification sub-sections, if needed by the software architect
  • Support source code integration, diff, merge, branching, check-in, etc., if needed by the software coders
  • Support unit test and integration test execution, if needed by the software testers

Qualifications

  • 3+ years experience in vehicle development, automotive testlab, NVH, chassis, suspension, or related field.
  • Write test profiles on hydraulic, mechanical, and vibration test equipment using software such as Roehrig Shock, MTS Damper test and MPT, Pro-Sig, and Instron
  • Consider and eliminate sources of error and variation when setting up testing to ensure robust results.
  • Creative problem solving, test design, and fixture design to support product development work streams
  • Proactively solve problems that arise during testing with or without engineer input.
  • Perform testing to determine root cause of performance problems and develop countermeasures to correct them.
  • Support vehicle development work by: Assembly and disassembly of vehicle components to facilitate testing (mostly suspension and interior), Installation and calibration of data acquisition including wire harnesses, sensors, and instrumentation amplifiers and Perform alignments with Hunter alignment equipment.
  • Measure and blueprint suspension components using advanced optical measurement equipment
  • Keep detailed records of all activities, measurements, and data for frequent future use.
  • Must be detail oriented and able work with small parts with tight tolerances
  • Troubleshooting and problem solving skills required
  • Experience with testing and instrumentation preferred
  • Prepare test parts, tools, equipment for international and domestic development trips
  • Must be able to multitask and work efficiently in a fast paced environment
  • Must have a flexible schedule that allows for significant travel, especially during the winter months.
  • Strong technical communication skills. Able to summarize test results in email, read and understand data and charts, and read technical specifications and drawings.
  • Valid driving license and reliable transportation.
  • Able to work effectively and accurately amidst distractions.
  • Able to perform light physical work consistently and lift up to 75 pounds occasionally.

This position potentially requires extensive field support and will be required to support activity at local customer locations including Dearborn, Chelsea, and Milford.
